Sports Injuries

A Message From Dr. Sabino Emil Cocos, Owner & Founder Of CoActiv Physical Therapy

It’s easy to brush off a sports injury and try to play through the pain, but it’s important to see a doctor.

Or, it can be effortless to feel down and “trapped,” wondering if you’ll ever be able to play sports or stay active like you used to…

You’re not alone if you’re going through this; many of us go through the same thing. In fact, we see patients in our physiotherapy center at Inspire all year long.

We think it’s stupid when doctors and other medical professionals tell hurt people to “rest.” We think this hurts you more and makes you more likely to get hurt again. Because when we rest, our muscles get weaker and waste away. Because of this, so many people who have sports injuries ask themselves:

“It’s been months, so why do I STILL have an injury that keeps me from being active and playing my favorite sport?”

People often think that if they rest for a few days, their sports injury will heal, and they’ll be able to return to their regular exercise routine. But when they try to start exercising again, they often feel more pain than before. When the person rests, they usually feel little or no pain. However, as soon as they start exercising again, the pain comes back and doesn’t seem to get better, no matter how long they rest.
Does It Describe You?

In our clinic, we frequently meet people who go to the doctor and are told to relax and “try these pain medicines” to “see how it works.” Then, four weeks later, because the ailment hasn’t improved, they return to the same doctor and are given MORE rest and ANOTHER prescription for even more potent drugs.

Rest isn’t always the most excellent treatment for sports injuries. So, if you’ve ever been irritated after chatting with many people and receiving contradictory information, know that you’re not alone. Because they might have similar symptoms, it’s easy to confuse a back injury with a hip condition.

Sports injuries are frequently misdiagnosed since the pain comes from somewhere other than the place that needs to be addressed. Resting over an extended period can lead other body portions to become weak and vulnerable to harm.

Unfortunately, the uncertainty surrounding “resting” sometimes leads to even greater procrastination and avoidance of decisions that may aid in the healing of an injury and return to regular exercise. Worse, many people simply accept that they no longer act as if it is normal or unavoidable.

Do you agree?

How to Quickly Ease Your Pain and Discomfort

Here are four things you can do about it:

And here are four things you can do about it:

  1. The first step is to choose whether or not to seek assistance – For some reason, people seem to believe that “time will just make the pain go away” if they ignore it long enough. Six months later, they’re still putting up with it even though nothing’s changed. They might become even less interested in sports and physical exercise if the situation worsens
  2. Second, be sure to perform the appropriate exercises – Your physical therapist will go over these with you and teach you precisely what to do. Correct exercises recommended by a PT can reduce discomfort while allowing you to move freely again fast, making them one of the finest things you can do to speed up your recovery and avoid problems.
  3. While rest is essential for healing, “too much rest” won’t hasten your recovery. – Recovery, it is often held, calls for complete rest. An injury cannot heal without proper blood circulation, which rest inhibits. Rehabilitation and strengthening exercises tailored to your specific condition and direct therapeutic intervention can help you recover fast and return to total health.
  4. It’s time for some “hands-on” physical therapy – Sports injury patients can benefit from therapeutic massage. Truth be told, here at CoActiv Physical Therapy, we treat sports injuries year-round. If you’re unable to play sports or be physically active, if your condition is causing difficulties at work or if it’s limiting your ability to spend time with loved ones, Physical Therapy may be able to help you go back to your life as quickly as possible.

“100% recommend CoActiv PT for your therapy. PT Sabino helped me so much with pain in my shoulder blade I had been dealing with for over a year with dry needling. It worked magic! I really needed help with strength but have multiple herniated discs from auto accidents. Sabino had the perfect program to strengthen me without aggravating my old injuries. With my new found strength I don’t notice my old injury pain nearly as much. Thank you Sabino for getting me ready for snowboarding season in Colorado!! It is just what I needed!!”

“I started having sacroiliac joint dysfunction recently so I contacted Emil at CoActiv. He did a very thorough assessment by doing several muscle tests and asking me questions to determine exactly what was going on regarding my weaknesses, hyper mobility and where I was experiencing pain. Then he educated me and gave me a home exercise program. Emil is so knowledgeable! I am finally feeling better now! I know how to self treat my issue and if I ever have a need for a PT I will be returning.”
